Carbon Footprint

So the term Carbon Footprint is now probably known by most of us - often misused and certainly misunderstood - here is my effort at simplifying things.

Firstly, it should probably be called a Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Footprint because these days it is defined as the total amount of greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere - obviously including Carbon Dioxide (CO2) but also Methane (CH4), Nitrous Oxide (N2O) and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), expressed in equivalent tons of CO2.

In case you were unaware, Methane for example is 25 times more potent a GHG than Carbon Dioxide.

This footprint can be associated with the activities of an individual, a community, an organisation, a process, a product, a service, or an event, among other things.

I deal with commercial and industrial clients so my interest lies with client company’s GHG emissions from their operations, including power generation used in building structures, industrial activities, and machinery and equipment.   I also look at their product’s,  measuring total GHG emissions throughout its life cycle – that is, from raw material extraction and production to the final use by consumers including recycling or disposal.  The level of scrutiny can be applied to their services.

There are 3 basic types of emission:

Scope 1 are direct emissions owned or controlled by an organisation - for example, burning of fossil fuels (in buildings, processes and transport).

Scope 2 are caused indirectly and arise from purchased energy - usually this is grid supplied electricity used in the business.

Scope 3 are more difficult since they are not produced by the organisation itself nor do they arise from owned or controlled assets - rather,  they come from activities up and down the value chain - for example, when you buy, use and dispose of products from 3rd party suppliers.

What does your Carbon (GHG) Footprint look like?

I have been working as an Energy Consultant for 34 years now and I can help you find out - give me a call (07774 746616) or email me to set up a discussion around what's involved and what it will cost you - as a one man consultancy I am usually pretty competitive.
