It is all too common that I am called in to inspect HVAC systems,  supposedly maintained by  A Cowboy Ltd,  to find ineffective ventilation due to poor servicing and maintenance.   Worn drive belts, broken or missing components, clogged filters, bearings worn to failure - all of this costs you money and fails to provide clean air.  These pictures are all taken from real installations.  The plant room below is not the worst I have come across - dirty filters just chucked in a corner, no attempt to clean up after working on the plant, no professional pride whatsoever.  Truly sad that this is not uncommon.

The good news is that it doesn't have to be this way.

This is a rebuilt fan unit with new bearings, anti-vibration mountings and sub-frame plus stripped down and re-built motor, new flexible connectors, drive belts etc.  What you are also looking at is a saving to the client of many thousands of pounds given that the alternative - as suggested by their previous maintenance contractor - was a new fan unit and motor! Refurbishment cost the client just 25% of the cost of a replacement unit and a refurbished fan, properly maintained will give this client 10 - 15 years of trouble free service. 

Sadly what you are also looking at was never re-serviced!  Client - who must remain nameless for legal reasons - invested £4000 to refurbish the unit and then failed to engage with the concept of regular servicing.  I re-visited the site recently and found our filters still in place 5 years after the event - there is a lesson there somewhere!

Several years ago I completed a major contract for McEwens of Perth - the oldest Department Store in Scotland  - creating a unique air conditioning and ventilation system for the first floor retail sales areas.  Similar contracts have also been carried out for the Territorial Army in Elgin, Moray Council, Bond Helicopters Ltd and Terasaki (Europe) Ltd - providing unique air handling and ventilation solutions to resolve very individual problems.

McEwens, in common with many retailers these days, have recognised the commercial benefits of providing a comfortable shopping environment. Benefits such as greater staff productivity and most important the tendency for customers to linger 'in-store' and perhaps part with a little more of their hard earned money.

In a second phase contract I also supplied Natural Ventilation 'Wind-Catchers' for McEwens newly developed Watergate site providing fresh air free of charge through existing roof penetrations in an architecturally sympathetic form.  As you can see this is also a site where the AlfaStrip long wave radiant heating system has been installed - a nice showcase for my holistic service.
