 Energy Surveys - for businesses

Which I cunningly sub-title "How do you actually know if your business wastes energy?" - which of course it does by the way

And for those of you who are aware of these things I can confirm that my surveys all aim to be compliant with the European Standard on Energy Audits:  EN16247

Any Old Factory
You will be glad to know - I feel sure - that saving energy in your business is very straight-forward - you just have to identify where the waste happens and then stop it!

Clever isn't it?  Of course it sounds easy but in reality it isn't, which is just as well or I wouldn't have a job!

OK, some energy waste is obvious - steam leaks for example or the annoying hiss of escaping compressed air, or someone leaving the lights on in an empty room
but for most industrial / commercial properties a professional Energy Survey is an essential step towards identifying opportunities for savings.

steam leaks are easy to spot  who left these on? come on hands up!

The published literature shows that at least 20% of all energy used by business is wasted, although other research puts this figure much higher - at around 40% - and it has been established that the UK alone loses over 668,000MJ of energy every year (equivalent to nearly 50,000,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide and accounting for over 10% of total energy losses from European buildings).

I have yet to visit a business with no energy savings available and 20%+ is often readily achievable from a range of fairly simple measures.  That's right - this isn't rocket science - but you do have to know where to look.

Here is a quote from a happy customer - "Just to let you know following your report sometime ago - the water charges have ceased with even last years refunded - all this makes a great difference as it is now £1000 pa - until your report we had no idea!"  Julian Watson - Banff Castle.  He didn't know where to look but I did and my survey paid for itself in that one item of saving - at least 3 times over!!!

All of this represents a fantastic opportunity to reduce your business overheads - and increase profits since making energy savings is generally much easier than, for example, generating new sales.

And when you are well advised it is also low risk and comes with guaranteed return on investment.

So where do you start?  I highlighted the word "simply" above because I believe that although you can of course give up the day job and become an Energy Manager, do the training and embark upon a new career in order to generate energy surveys in-house - your best bet may be to obtain external assistance from someone with expertise in energy efficiency across a variety of disciplines (hello!) to visit your business, identify all opportunities for energy savings, prioritise these measures in terms of payback against investment and then create a 'shopping list' for implementation.

That is where I would like to help - I can provide you with a cost-effective energy survey resulting in a definitive (and plain English) report - highlighting all tangible areas where energy can be saved without compromising on production, processes or performance.  My reports all contain a one page Action Plan and a % return for each measured being proposed.

I will visit your business, observe working practices, investigate processes and production, identify and quantify energy users (lighting, heating, ventilation, refrigeration, machinery etc), chat to employees about working practices and then produce a recommendations report identifying where the opportunities for savings lie.

I stress that my report will be in plain and simple language (mostly because I have to understand it too!) and will prioritise the recommended measures so that you can make an informed choice for your business.  Please note that I have highlighted the word tangible because I will not suggest you put in double glazing or move to the Bahamas to use less heating fuel unless the payback is within 5 years!

You may even qualify for a free survey over the next few months if you are based in Scotland.

I work with the Carbon Trust (fully accredited to carry out both Opportunities Assessment and Solutions Development work) and am also a member of the Energy Institute and CIBSE (with whom I am an accredited Low Carbon Consultant).

If you are an SME (small to medium enterprise, defined as spending over £30K/year on energy with less than 250 employees and a turnover of under £25M) based in Scotland the Carbon Trust will fully fund my services to visit and audit your business to identify tangible opportunities for cutting energy use without detriment to performance.

Join the likes of Aquascot, Coca-Cola Enterprises, Halliburton, Kvaerner, Commerzbank, Dril-Quip, Tyco, Aberdeenshire Council, Moray Council, Stirling Council, Johnson & Johnson, Schlumberger, Aberdeen Football Club, Scotch Premier Meats, Pataks, Macrae Foods, Fisheries Research Services, Macaulay Institute, Global Santa Fe, Cala Hotels and many more to start reducing your operating costs.

A couple of final thoughts in this area - some of you will have noticed that you pay something called the Climate Change Levy on your energy bills - if you have ever wondered what that wee tax is then read about it here.  And, finally, some of your investments in energy saving technology may well be eligible for Enhanced Capital Allowance - and if you don't know what that is then read about it here.
