For those of
you who are interested in this sort of thing here is a potted history
of
Stewart King -
Energy Consultant
Graduate in Applied Biology (2.1Hons from
Hatfield Polytechnic) - included a year's industrial training working with the Thames Water
Authority in Little Marlow (Buckinghamshire) monitoring potable water
supplies for microbiological and chemical standards - very interesting -
can always say I worked on a sewage farm! Glamorous past.
Moved to Aberdeen in
1983 to work as a Marine Biologist for Aberdeen University (AUMS
/ AURIS Ltd) advising the offshore oil industry on environmental impact and marine
growth issues on offshore installations. Appointed Offshore Representative for AUMS on the Hutton TLP float-out
- for which I obtained my Offshore Survival Certificate from RGIT. Also carried out Benthic
Monitoring along the North/North East coast of Scotland to assess oil
impact on native flora and fauna.
Sold out to industry - taken on by Cebo UK
Ltd to run their cementitious fluids laboratory in Aberdeen.
Obtained post grad qualification in the "rheology of cementitious
fluids" - riveting stuff - from Oxford University.
Sick to death of labs I was promoted to
the subsea grouting department and after a year or so became Divisional Manager. Developed the use of Cegrass - artificial
seaweed
(yes honestly - great chat up line in there somewhere) for the prevention of erosion around subsea structures worldwide
- including, interestingly, a shipwreck offshore Australia.
Taken on by Cebo International to
develop landfill capping and lining using natural clay products covering Scotland
& Ireland until made I was made redundant (along with many
of my colleagues - where are you all now I wonder?) in late 1990.
Early 1991 - established Stewart King
Environmental Engineers (couldn't think of a catchier name) - consultancy
practice selling energy efficiency advice and equipment. From those
early days at the coal face selling actual working energy efficiency
products I built up both a client base and also a portfolio of buildings
and processes that I understood and could help improve. Clients
began to ask me to look at more than just the systems I was there to
improve and of course I was chatting to engineers, electricians,
architects - experts who were only too glad to pass on their knowledge.
Over the years I dropped the products and moved onto pure advisory
services and was commissioned to provide some energy audits to some of
the oil service companies in Aberdeen and also - importantly - Moray
Council. One of my earliest contracts was to survey and make
recommendations on heating and lighting in Forres Academy and these
early reports were sent to what was then the Institute of Energy.
They liked my work, granted me membership and hey presto my career was
set - Moray provided me with several more jobs and when the results
started to roll in - bills slashed and working environments improved -
the word started to spread.
I
then registered with the EMAS programme, then later Action Energy and now
the Carbon Trust providing government funded energy services, as well as
privately commissioned work for those clients who want my services direct
and immediate. Over the years I have picked up many skills - some by
simple osmosis, others through industry training, others still through
Carbon Trust training - all of which combines to make me a useful tool for
industry and commerce. I have specialist skills in lighting to the
point where I can provide a complete lighting design service (including
procurement and installation through my industry contacts) and I also
provide heating design services (again from first principles, through
specification, procurement and commissioning).
I see myself as a holistic Energy
Consultant - that is one who will not only tell you what is wrong with your
building or process but also provide you with a viable, cost effective
solution and put my name against it so you know that I am confident of my
recommendations. This is Stewart King Environmental Engineers Ltd
and I am in business to save you money!
What sort
of work do I do and for whom?
Carbon
Trust (formerly Action
Energy) - the Government funded industrial and commercial energy saving
advisory service from whom I carry out industrial / commercial energy surveys. To date this
has included surveys for Aberdeen City Council, Halliburton, Dril-Quip,
MacGregor Energy Services, Commerzbank, Isleburn Group, Johnson & Johnson,
Moray Council, Scotch Premier
Meat, Hebridean Seafare, Weatherford Completion Services, Caledonian
Ferguson Timpson, Fisheries Research Service, Patak's, Oceaneering, A C
Yule, KBR, The Findhorn Foundation, Global Santa Fe, Macrae Foods, Cathkin
Clean, Skretting Ltd, XPress Print, Belhaven Pubs, Redwood Leisure,
Stirling Council, International Fish Canners (Scofish Group), Aberdeen
Football Club, Marathon Oil, Aberdeen Harbour Board and Aberdeenshire Council
- to name a select few - sorry if I missed your company out.
Andersons
Elderly Care Home in Elgin - complete energy survey of their two
properties followed by Project Management contract to re-design and
replace the oil fired central heating systems with modern gas fired
boiler-plant. Contract included generation of tender specifications
and tender documents for selected potential sub-contractors. The
completed installation includes a unique back-up power
system incorporating DC inverters to allow the system to run on off peak
electricity during on peak periods and results in energy savings in excess
of 40% over the old systems.
City of
Aberdeen Council - I have worked with the City Council on a
number of energy audits - some via the Carbon Trust but mostly private - and have so far presented whole building Energy
Surveys for the City Music Hall, St. Machar Academy, both
Kittybrewster and Summerhill
office complexes, Marlepool Primary, Glashieburn Primary, Abbotswell
Primary, Kincorth Academy, Hazlehead Academy, Aberdeen Grammar School, Bon
Accord Swimming Baths, the Beach Leisure Centre and Ice Rink and the Beacon Sports Centre.
Many of my
recommendations have been actioned resulting in valuable energy savings
for this cash strapped authority.
Greggs the
Bakers - for several years I have been assisting Greggs in
replacement of high output forced air curtain heaters with low energy long
wave radiant heaters - I have so far effected 60-80% energy savings in
over 100 of their premises and have replaced more blown air over-door
curtain heaters than I have had lobster dinners (- maybe not!)
MacDonald
Hotels - from Inverurie in Aberdeenshire right down to Canterbury with
several stops in between I have provided this prestigious client with
bespoke control systems for Heating and Ventilation plant in 7 of their
properties with energy savings as high as 70% achieved in large hotels
through introduction of effective control.
McEwens of
Perth - I have been working with McEwens for several years now and
have procured a whole range of services for their Perth and Inverness
operations. At Inverness I designed, specified and procured low energy
heating for the whole property. In Perth I have specified and sourced fuel saving
equipment to the central heating boiler-plant; specified, sourced and even
physically installed water saving urinal
controllers (yes - me - I fitted the blummin' things! - me - an energy
consultant - can you imagine!); specified and procured low energy radiant heaters to replace air curtains;
specified and procured low
energy heating for their new retail building; designed and built air conditioning and ventilation
systems for the
first floor retail areas of the original store; and, specified and
procured natural
ventilation for their new 'at home' building. Check them out if you are in
Perth - nice store, nice people and of course lovely cool place to do your
shopping.
Britannia
Asset Management in Glasgow - for this client in conjunction with M&E
Consultants KJ Tait Associates, I designed and specified lighting for the
entire Bothwell Street offices, replacing over 1500 fittings with Virtual
Daylight luminaires to provide high quality vertically polarised lighting in all
office accommodation over 6 floors - and all to LG3:2001. The
results speak for themselves - occupant satisfaction ratios over 84% which I
gather is rather high.
Church of
Scotland - over the past 10 years I have designed, specified, procured and in many cases
organised and overseen installation of long wave radiant heating
systems for churches - cutting costs and improving conditions for
congregations around the country. Here is a
typical example of the reaction to the new heating....."1998/1999
has brought a bitterly cold winter to this area and it is only fair to
report that our Church, which is situated on an exposed hill facing the
Moray Firth, has never before experienced such warmth and comfort. The AlfaStrip electric ceiling heating has proved, without
any doubt, to be extremely effective, economical and safe.It is a unique and satisfying means of heating and is highly
recommended”.This came from the Church of Scotland in Findochty, near Buckie
in Aberdeenshire - which if you look on a map is about as exposed as you
get! Recent projects include Buccleuch and Greyfriars Kirk in
Edinburgh and the North Church in Perth both of which are architecturally
important and hard to be designed with aesthetic consideration very much to
the fore. The results speak for themselves with the Churches inviting
other church members from around the UK to attend and learn from their
positive experiences.
United
Biscuits, Carlisle - at the McVities factory where they were spending
in excess of £1,000,000/year on energy I was called in to audit the
electric motors and subsequently Procure & Install over 150
drive controls for conveyors, fans and other equipment. Subsequent testing
showed average
energy savings of 19.87%.
Scottish
Water - just prior to the unification of the 3 Scottish Water Boards
I was commissioned to carry out complete energy audits of 2 major water
treatment works (one fresh water potable and one sewage treatment).
My report included a recommendation to install drive controls
throughout these sites which was carried out through a third
party contractor with subsequent major energy savings. The measure
is now being rolled out throughout all of their sites where appropriate.
Moray
Council - as I mentioned above I have been engaged by Moray Council to
provide energy audits from the start of my career and to date have
surveyed most of their Primary and Secondary Schools, many Nursing Homes,
Town Halls, Swimming Pools and other Public Buildings. This has led
to various contracts including: design, and procurement of low energy
heating systems to schools, town halls, public toilets and council offices;
design and procurement of
lighting systems for Elgin Academy; design and procurement of boiler
improvements to plant in several primary
and secondary schools; design and procurement of water saving systems for
many properties; re-design and project management of the re-building
of air handling
plant in more than 15 schools and public buildings and the subsequent
project management of maintenance contracts; design and procurement of a
lighting control system for Forres Academy; design and specification of
classroom ventilation systems; and even the demolition of a Primary
School annexe - but it is probably best not to ask!
