Good Housekeeping for your house

(no cost energy saving!)

This is where we really get down to basics but believe it or not there are some very valuable savings to be had for nothing so read on.....
Try just using the appliances you need.  Sounds easy but try it.  Don't leave TV sets and videos on standby - they consume 50% of their electrical rating with just that red light on!!!!   That goes for your PC monitor too - switch it off - a screen saver does not save energy!
Keep your freezer regularly defrosted and try to keep it full - even using newspaper balls to fill the spaces.  Check the door seals on fridges and freezers - warm air gets in very easily - a good door seal will hold a sheet of paper in place when closed.
The sun is a readily available, cheap source of heat so use it by opening internal doors of those rooms that benefit from solar gains to allow the warm air to travel throughout the house.  Don't tumble dry or use the radiators to dry clothes if you can get them outside - you'll find they smell nicer too if air dried.
When using the washing machine try to wash full loads and use the lower 40degC wash wherever possible.  Modern washing powders/solutions are designed for this temperature and this will save you up to 75% of the cost of running the hotter cycles.
Did you know that just turning down your central heating thermostat by 1DegC will save you about £10 a year.  You probably won't notice any difference.  Keep your radiators free from obstruction - especially keep foam upholstered chairs away from radiators - the foam makes a very effective heat insulator which means you don't feel the benefit!
Keep your stored hot water at no more than 60DegC.  It will avoid scalding risk and save you money.
When you are cooking always select the right sized pan for the job.  If you cut food into smaller pieces and put lids on the food will cook more quickly.  Use your microwave for defrost rather than than the cooker - better still use the sun.

When we find out any more we will add them - if you have any suggestions email us.
